Berri Stresses on National Unity Gov’t after Elections

Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri said it was crucial to form a national unity cabinet after the upcoming parliamentary elections, regardless of the results “because Lebanon cannot live except through consensus.”

In an interview with Kuwaiti daily al-Dar on Sunday, Berri said previous experiences proved that unilateralism drove Lebanon to crises.

Berri said he had told all the participants in the latest session of the national dialogue in the presidential residence in Baabda that a national unity cabinet will definitely be established after the elections.

He refused to comment on reports which said that a Syrian-Saudi understanding was set to reconcile Lebanese politics, adding that any Arab understanding would have positive effects on Lebanon.

HMAYED: REGARDLESS OF THEIR RESULTS, ELECTIONS WON’T ELIMINATE NOW ISOLATE ANYONE
Development and Liberation bloc MP Ayoub Hmayed said that regardless of the results of the upcoming parliamentary elections, the bloc would neither eliminate nor isolate anyone “since we are ruled by consensus and partnership.”

During a political forum in the southern village of Aita Ashaab on Sunday, Hmayed said the opposition would run responsibly and unified in the elections. He called on people not to be misled by slogans that incited practices adopted by some to preserve their power.

Hmayed said he hoped inter-Arab reconciliations would lead to more Arab solidarity in confronting basic challenges, primarily the Palestinian cause. He noted such reconciliations would positively reflect on Lebanon.

He also called on the Lebanese to benefit from the atmosphere of Arab reconciliation in confronting Israel’s daily violations of UNSCR 1701.
